Clinical Supervision - Implicit Bias - Ethics

This comprehensive three-part workshop series is designed for clinical supervisors and mental health professionals seeking to deepen their understanding and practice of Relational Cultural Supervision  through the integration of trauma-informed and decolonial perspectives. Participants will explore the complexities of supervisory relationships, develop skills for addressing power dynamics, and learn to create supportive and ethical supervisory environments. Through experiential activities, reflective discussions, and scenario-based exercises, attendees will gain practical insights and strategies for navigating the relational depth and empathy in supervision.

Session 1:  Introduction to Relational Cultural Supervision

Date: August 23, 2024

Description: This session examines how Relational Cultural Theory (RCT)'s emphasis on connection, mutuality, and empathy can transform supervisory relationships and support providers' well-being and development. Participants will gain an understanding of how power imbalances and unconscious biases influence supervision and learn strategies to address these challenges. Key topics include recognizing and navigating power dynamics, fostering equitable and inclusive supervisory practices, and using reflective techniques to mitigate implicit bias.

Session 2:  Trauma-Informed Co-regulation in the Clinical Supervision Space

Date: August 30, 2024

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Description: This session explores how understanding and applying trauma-informed principles can enhance supervisory relationships and support providers' emotional capacities. Participants will learn about the concept of co-regulation—how supervisors and supervisees can work together to deal with stressors and emotional responses effectively. The workshop will cover strategies for creating a brave, empathetic supervision environment, recognizing and responding to trauma-related activations, and integrating care work practices into supervision.

Description: This session examines how to navigate ethical dilemmas and maintain professional boundaries while integrating trauma-informed and relational cultural approaches. Participants will explore best practices for establishing and upholding clear boundaries, examining dual relationships, and addressing ethical challenges in a trauma-sensitive context. The session will emphasize the importance of ethical integrity and respectful interactions in fostering a supportive supervisory environment.

Presenters’ Biographies

John Sykes, LCSW is the founder and owner of According To Sykes, LLC

John Sykes, LCSW is the founder and owner of According To Sykes, LLC, a liberation based healing group practice located in the Hyde Park Community in Chicago. As a dedicated integrated therapist, abolitionist, and educator, John is passionate about helping individuals achieve mental and emotional well-being. With nearly 40 years of experience, John specializes in liberation-based healing practices, somatic and embodiment (body-based) work, and trauma specific interventions and methods. John holds a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Services Administration from Northeastern Illinois University and a Master of Arts in Clinical Social Work from Loyola University School of Social work. John is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (IL) who regularly engages in spaces that actively work to unlearn harmful colonial practices, and to better center the impact of racist, oppressive, generational, and systemic factors in people’s daily lived experience. John’s therapeutic approach is rooted in wellness and healing, emphasizing respect and self-determination. John tailors interventions to meet each client's unique needs, fostering a collaborative and empowering therapeutic relationship.

Dr. Pamela Fullerton, Ph.D., is the founder and clinical director of Advocacy & Education Consulting, a counseling and consulting organization dedicated to ensuring social justice and advocacy through equitable access to mental health and well-being services. She is a Latina bilingual Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), a Certified Dialectical Behavior Therapy professional (C-DBT), a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP), a Certified Grief Informed Professional (CGP), and a consultant specializing in working with BIPOC communities, undocumented communities, immigration and acculturation, trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and career counseling. In addition to being a professional writer and speaker, Dr. Fullerton is an adjunct instructor in the Counselor Education department at Northeastern Illinois University. She is a published author and runs a nonprofit to support Latinx youth in the Chicagoland area. Dr. Fullerton also consults for various behavioral health advisory boards providing advice and input to assist in promoting health equity and justice initiatives for underserved communities in Illinois.
